What Is The Truth?

By Bobbie Jo King on 3-15-2024

Welcome to March! We hope you are doing well, and your year has started out fruitful. How many resolutions, however, have gone by the wayside?? Hmm? Be honest; we want only the truth now.

Truth. In the infamous words of Pontius Pilate in John 18:38, “What is truth?” In the verse preceding this, Jesus tells us, “for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth.” He also tells us He is “the way, and the truth, and the life.” In John 17, Jesus is praying to His Father and in verse 17 asks God to “[s]anctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”

Seems pretty clear. God, Jesus, and the Bible are truth. If you’re reading this, you probably already know and believe this. What about truth outside of the Bible? Truth is 2 + 2 equals 4. Too easy? Probably. With big tech, legacy media and even our own government censoring based on preventing “misinformation,” it’s often very difficult to find the truth.

David Barton of Wallbuilders tells us that we must love the truth. He goes on to say that we must love it more than our feelings, preconceptions and opinions. Truth must be paramount. If we don’t love the truth, God tells us in 2 Thes 2:10-12 that He will “send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged.” We all know that God is very straight forward with us. So tell me why we see what we see in our culture!

According to Barton in Biblical Citizenship taped back in 2021 (emphasis mine):

  • 3 out of 5 Americans believe that there is NO absolute moral truth
  • 4 out of 5 Millennials believe that there is NO absolute moral truth
  • 1 out of 2 Christians believe that there is NO absolute moral truth
  • 80% of Christians believe that religions other than Christianity will get you into Heaven
  • 42% of Christians believe that Atheists will get into Heaven
  • 56% of Christians believe that a belief in no religion at all will get you into Heaven
  • 20 years ago, 85% of all Americans professed a belief in Christianity. Today it’s down to 65%.
  • 75% of college students want to change to socialism
  • 69% of Millennials want to change to socialism
  • 41% of all Americans want to change to socialism

Those stats appear to give us a reason as to why our society is where it is. Many do not have a love of truth. Many have become deluded into thinking men can be women, women can be men, in utero babies are just clumps of cells, lives don’t matter, etc. Barton also tells us that 77% of traditional-values Americans self-censor. That’s an awfully high number, friends.

We as Christians must learn to defend the truth. This is going to take courage, but it’s also going to take a serious effort to actually finding the truth. Most of the search engines apply algorithms that can make finding truth much harder. We have found it beneficial to look for source documents and first-hand accounts and use those.

Allow me to point to something God tells us in Revelation 21:8: “But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (emphasis mine) This is a mike-drop moment if ever there was one.

Let’s take stock in where we are in loving the truth enough to diligently search for the truth so we can courageously defend the truth when needed.
